(San Juan-PR) – Within the framework of a global effort, the Office of the Comptroller of Puerto Rico (OCPR) will carry out an evaluation to calibrate the government's actions in the areas of governance, financing, and public policy with respect to climate change. The evaluations will be carried out during the month of July to consolidate data in the Climate Scanner tool.
“With this project we join other oversight entities of the world to carry out independent evaluations. In this way we can obtain reliable information on the financing, governance, and public policies related to global warming and climate change in Puerto Rico,” expressed Comptroller Yesmín M. Valdivieso.
The project consists of gathering information on the government's initiatives with respect to the allocation of public resources, the formulation of public policy, and the participation of different actors in governance. In addition, it will be possible to evaluate the level of adherence of governments to the commitments in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change of 1994.
The Climate Scanner rapid review tool, designed to standardize the analysis criteria conducted in each country, would provide accessible information, with clear language and visual resources. This rapid review structure includes metrics, components, and items in its web application.
The project aims to evaluate the climate action of governments, consolidate local data with global data, and substantiate possible future audits in specific areas. In addition, the project, which follows a standardized methodology, seeks to communicate the results of the relevant information in the web application, share experiences, and contribute to the global voice of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI).
“We are in the execution part of this project, whose conclusions will be presented at the end of 2024. We seek the cooperation of public and private entities to conclude this work, which will constitute a great contribution to knowledge and informational transparency, consistent with our constitutional mission,” indicated the Comptroller.
