Investigation into the failure to report an accident involving an official Municipality of Maricao vehicle assigned to the mayor
San Juan, Puerto Rico (July 2, 2026) — The Comptroller of Puerto Rico, CPA and Attorney Carmen Vega Fournier, reported today the results of Investigation OC-27-02 into the failure to investigate and to notify the Office of the Comptroller of an accident involving an official Municipality vehicle assigned to the mayor.
The investigation arose from a complaint alleging that a vehicle accident occurred on October 14, 2025 involving a municipal vehicle, and that it was neither investigated administratively by the Municipality nor reported to the Office of the Comptroller as required by Act No. 96.
The report notes that the Office of the Comptroller of Puerto Rico (OCPR) obtained information on the vehicle, a 2023 Dodge Durango, and identified a claim with an insurance company that agreed to pay the Municipality $5,494.77; however, as of the date of this Report the vehicle had not been repaired, even though the Municipality allegedly sent the vehicle to a body and paint shop for repair.
The OCPR concluded that the Municipality failed to comply with the applicable legal and regulatory provision, depriving the OCPR of information about the accident and resulting in the Municipality not having detailed information on the facts in order to assign responsibility to the officials or employees who acted negligently.
The Comptroller urged “the Municipality’s personnel to ensure compliance with the applicable law and regulations and to promote the effective, economical, efficient and ethical use of Government resources for the benefit of the people of Puerto Rico”.
