San Juan, Puerto Rico — The new Comptroller of Puerto Rico, Attorney Carmen A. Vega Fournier, held her first official meeting today with the technical and managerial teams of the Municipal Audits Division of the Office of the Comptroller. With a calm but firm attitude, she reaffirmed her commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence in the oversight of the use of public funds.
Attorney Vega Fournier was sworn in last Tuesday as Comptroller of Puerto Rico, and just a few days later, today she began her tenure by meeting with more than 140 municipal auditors. She did so within the framework of the First Technical Meeting of fiscal year 2025–2026, a gathering in which the goals, strategies, and audit priorities for the new cycle were reviewed.
“This was a great opportunity to introduce myself to my new fellow auditors on my third day of work and to share my vision with them. It is a full-day meeting, where legal opinions, cases on the misappropriation of public funds by collectors, and matters addressed by the Office of Government Ethics, among others, are discussed,” the Comptroller stated
The day unfolded in an atmosphere of professional analysis and reflection. The Comptroller stressed the importance of strengthening internal control processes in the municipalities, promoting the sound administration of public resources, and ensuring a more efficient and transparent governmental management. In addition, she made a call for shared responsibility, recalling that the work of each auditor has a direct impact on the trust that citizens place in institutions.
“Our work is essential to guarantee that public funds are used responsibly and in accordance with the law. I am grateful for the dedication and commitment of this team of professionals who, day after day, watch over the integrity of the municipal public system,” added Vega Fournier.
On the other hand, the meeting also served as a space to outline oversight priorities, strengthen coordination among divisions, and reaffirm the mission of the Office of the Comptroller to continue raising the standards of ethics, independence, and professional excellence. The truth is that the gathering marked the beginning of a new institutional chapter, one that combines experience, openness to dialogue, and a vision for the future.
“With this first technical meeting we formally begin a new tenure, in keeping with my policy of participation and collaboration. So this step symbolizes more than a beginning; it represents a firm commitment to strengthening public trust and accountability in the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico,” the Comptroller concluded.
