For the first time, communications-area directors of the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) of Latin America and the Caribbean met to design a proposed Regional Action Plan. This was done with the purpose of including communication strategies to improve the availability and use of oversight products. The workshop, held on March 13 and 14 in Santiago, Chile, was organized by the Technical Commission on Good Governance Practices (CTPBG) of the Latin American and Caribbean Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (OLACEFS).
During the workshop, emphasis was placed on the evaluation of the websites of each Office of the Comptroller or Court of Auditors, according to the Index of Availability of Information to Citizens on the Institutional Management of the SAIs (IDIGI).
On the other hand, from an organizational standpoint, we analyzed the elements that the communications offices of the SAIs must take into account to publicize their work. From a functional and image standpoint, we discussed the way a communications area should operate to ensure an efficient communication process, its channels and its strategies.
There was an excellent exchange of ideas about the good practices we carry out to communicate oversight and prevention work. Among the initiatives mentioned are: the use of applications, social networks, short videos, infographics, user-friendly website design, improving the language of reports for greater reader clarity, training in writing for the staff of the Offices of the Comptroller so that reports are less technical, and promoting greater citizen participation.
In addition to Puerto Rico, the other SAIs present were: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay. This is just the beginning, since we committed to continue sharing our good practices for the benefit of the other SAIs. We thank the event coordinators for bringing together the communicators of the SAIs to unify strategies for promoting oversight efforts and achieving greater transparency.
